From 1997 through 2001, the Houston Texans became one of the most successful expansion teams in NFL history, turning in winning records and playoff appearances each season.

The Texans were founded after Houston oil businessman Bob McNair had a failed bid to bring an NFL team to a city called the “Houston Oilers.”

The NFL then signed an agreement to put a new franchise in Houston for the 2002 season that would be owned by McNair’s expansion group.
